SHCS 1:1 Information Page

Thanks to the exceptional generosity of parents at our spring 2016 Auction and Gala, Sacred Heart Cathedral School began a 1:1 (one student to one device) Chromebook initiative with the 2016-2017 school year. Students in 6th, 7th & 8th grade have a Chromebook assigned to them for their use during the school day. Students in 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade have access to a cart of Chromebooks which is shared among the grade. Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade classrooms and the Art room received additional Chromebooks and iPads for use in small group settings.

What is a Chromebook? What is G Suite?

Chromebooks are a new type of computer designed to help you get things done faster and easier. They run Chrome OS, an operating system that has multiple layers of security, cloud storage, and the most popular Google products built-in. (source Google)

G Suite (formerly known as Google Apps for Education) is a free suite of productivity tools - word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, email, etc - that allow teachers and students to collaborate in real time.
Currently the students use the devices at school only. We are studying the need for allowing the devices to go home in the future. Students can access everything they do at school from a computer at home. They just need to use their login information on google.com and sign in.

What are the benefits of using educational technology?

The driving question is: How can educational technology be better than the traditional approach? Google certified teacher, Mrs. Nicole Erwin, explained, “When students are more engaged, when they can collaborate easily with peers, when they can get immediate feedback on their work, have their individual academic needs met and they can express learning in new ways, then we can say that we are getting the most out of the technology experience.”

Privacy and Security

From Google: Two of the most common questions regarding Google in general, and G Suite specifically, are security and privacy. We take both topics very seriously and truly believe that our offerings are a great option for customers on both fronts. Our business is built on our users’ trust: trust in our ability to properly secure their data and our commitment to respect the privacy of the information they place in our systems by not giving that information to others or using it inappropriately.

An additional FAQ page regarding Security and Privacy can be found at support.google.com where you can find more information. Also, please see the Google Security & Privacy page.

How does my student use Google Classroom? Do they still need RenWeb?

As part of the G Suite productivity tools, Google Classroom provides a virtual space for teachers and students to collaborate.

Assignments with a due date in Classroom will be flagged as "Not Done" until the student turns in the work through Classroom or marks it "Done"

For the 2016-2017 school year, 5th-8th grade teachers are listing all homework assignments and tests in RenWeb. The assignment may direct the student to complete an activity in Classroom.
