Accelerated Reader
SHCS uses Accelerated Reader, a curriculum-based assessment tool that enables teachers to monitor both the quantity and quality of their students' reading practice.
Students select a book from more than 144,000 titles in the AR program. Each book is assigned a point value based on the number of words and its reading difficulty. After reading, the student takes a multiple-choice comprehension test on the book's content. The program scores the test, awards the student points based on the results, and keeps a complete record. Students select their own books and read at their own pace. Students have access to AR in all classrooms, during their library time, and during after school Open Access hours.
*Points accumulated are per each 9 week period
Students are given an individualized goal by their teacher based on their own reading strength and results from the STAR assessment.
AR assigns an Interest Level rating to each book. Read this letter to learn more about interest level.
